Insta-Mexico City

Pyramids and piñatas and pom-poms, oh my! Mexico City has so much to offer…tons of museums, great food, and so many neighborhoods to explore. Highlights included walking up the Pyramid of the Sun and visiting Frida Kahlo’s home.

Bird Mobile

The bird pattern from Craft-a-Day can also be used to make a colorful mobile. Make 3-5 birds in a variety of colors and use bakers twine and a needle to poke through the center of each bird. Tie on painted wooden beads between each bird to complete the look.

BK Craft Camp Banner

Brooklyn Craft Camp was a huge success thanks to Brett Bara for organizing it and all the wonderful people who helped out and attended.

I designed the logo and programs and decorated the photo booth background with tissue paper. I also had a craft table for people to stop by and make birds and chicks from my book Craft-a-Day.

The banners were all made with card stock and hung with yarn. I enlarged the logo and printed it out on regular printer paper and then stacked it on top of the card stock and cut the letters out. I used a yarn needle to poke the holes at the top.

The letters can also be covered with fabric and then sewn with a sewing machine, which is what I did for my sister’s wedding a few years ago. For more camp photos, check out the BuzzFeed recap!

Plush Chick

The Plush Chick from my book Craft-a-Day has been getting some buzz!

This little chick showed up in the March issue of Better Homes and Gardens and more recently it made an appearance on Martha Stewart’s Crafts Dept. Blog. It’s also part of the Spring Edition iPad App which is available now. Or you can drag the pattern to your desktop and make your own chick for Easter!

Supplies:
printer paper
pencil
scissors
black, yellow, white, and orange felt
sewing thread
sewing needle
fiberfill

Directions:
1. Print chick pattern on printer paper.
2. Transfer pattern and cut shapes out of black, yellow, white, and orange felt.
Cut an extra piece out of any color for the back.
3. Arrange shapes as in the photograph. Sew in place using a straight stitch.
4. Align back piece with front. Use a blanket stitch around the outside edges to sew pieces together.
Leave a 1-inch opening along the bottom.
5. Stuff with fiberfill.
6. Use a blanket stitch along the bottom to sew it closed.

Felt Hearts

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Last weekend I had a blast making Valentine’s crafts at the Brooklyn Brainery. We made felt ornaments, garlands, and stitched cards from my book Craft-a-Day.

It was fun to see different color combos.

And even after the power unexpectedly went out, people were busy crafting in the low-light. Thanks for coming out!

Chris Uphues is a talented Brooklyn artist whose infamous Hearts can be seen everywhere.

He recently created mini patches that are adorable in every way. I recently had the chance to make a few projects with them:

Mini ornament.

Pom-pom Headband

Kollabora is a DIY community that has plenty of inspiration, tutorials, and kits to create anything you can dream of. If you want to learn how to knit, this Newbie Knitted Headband is a great beginner project.

I modified the project slightly by k1, p1 across and sewing on two pom-poms made with a pom-pom maker. My friend Kelly ended up being the perfect model and her husband, photographer Tanveer Badal, snapped the pic.

Yarn Cactus

Well. I think it’s safe to say I finally have a green thumb! I spotted some adorable knit cactuses at a yarn shop in Bozeman when I was visiting my sister. I found this knit pattern on Ravelry which I based for the cactus on the right. I crocheted the three mini ones with different heights.

I stuffed the cacti with polyfill and then hot-glued them to a cardboard circle. I then used pebbles to cover the cardboard.

I have a feeling there is going to be a whole bunch of mini cacti in my future!

And best of all, no watering is required!

Brooklyn Craft Camp

Mark your calendars! Brooklyn Craft Camp is coming March 16th! The awesome Brett Bara is organizing it and it’s going to be so much fun. In between classes you even get to craft with me! Greenpoint Handskills

Over the weekend I teamed up with Julie Schneider and Kim Grassie who started Greenpoint Handskills to make owlies and hearts from my book, Craft-a-Day, at the Greenpoint Library.

It was SO much fun to see the different colors and variations people made of the owlies. They are all just so cute. Greenpoint Handskills meets once a month so check out their Facebook group page for more info.

Montana 2013

Well. I finally experienced a real winter again. I took a break in Minnesota and Montana for a few weeks in January. And although I could have done without the crazy negative temps in Minnesota, it was good to be home for a bit. Despite the cold, my friend and I managed to go skating at the nearby rec center to relive our hockey days from high school. And of course I just had to add pom-poms to my skates. My mom and I later flew to Bozeman, Montana to visit my sister and her husband and we spent the weekend at Old Faithful Snow Lodge in Yellowstone National Park. We saw a lot of bison, elk, and swans on the way in and rode in on these amazing vehicles on skis. We cross-country skied every day (something I haven’t done in over 20 years!) and it was a fantastic vacation. Below are some highlights.
